Bronwyn Arundel is a potter making fun, functional pottery in Nanaimo, BC. You can find her and her work in person at her gallery, Nanaimo Ceramic Arts at 115 Chapel Street. open 11-5 Tuesdays to Saturdays

All orders are currently made to order with an average of 6 weeks turn around

Holiday prep, shows, new clay conference, parent teacher conferences, kiln repairs... It’s been a busy week and a mini lesson in letting go of what I can’t control and accepting that time has limits.
I know I can meet what comes, even when I’m under water. I know that at this time of year I’m in good company.

I’m pretty excited and honoured to be chatting with Deb @luckyrabbitpottery and Carol this Friday! Deb was the art market mamma to all us Nova Scotia newbie potters, I’m very thankful for the early encouragement she gave me. Always welcomed in her booth with a smile and a hug.

Hello Nanaimo Friends, I am on the hunt for someone in need of an August house/pet sitter for my visiting Artist. She will be doing an artist in residence for the next 6 months but unfortunately our usual place is taken for the month of August. Please message me if you know anyone who will be away for a part or all of august and could use a responsible adult to watch pets or water the garden.

I am so excited to be teaching a 5 day wheel throwing and surface decoration class this July. July 17-21 10-4 we are going to play with clay and challenge ourselves with a holistic look at pottery. Take a staycation this summer to beautiful Vancouver Island and make friends and pots in my bright downtown studio. Walk to the ocean for lunch or explore the forests and scenic boardwalk. To see them all spread out just the way they were loaded. Speculating on how the fire moved through the chambers, how the change in wind direction affected cooler areas, where ash built up. Remembering @gordonhutchenspottery simple speech at the lighting of this fire the think about how hard our trees worked storing carbon and minerals now absorbed in the cells or our mugs and sculptures.

Located on the Salish Sea, Nanaimo is only 2hrs from Vancouver by Ferry and 15 min from as much nature as you could want. Our little Harbour city boasts many hikes. A gorgeous waterfront and an abundance of kind and welcoming artists. Residence have 24 hr access to their studio and NCA equipment and glaze chemistry room. Our cozy subsidized bachelor overlooks a gorgeous garden and is walking distance from downtown and the studio. Artists receive business mentorship and are encouraged to create a body of work for a solo show in our gallery. In exchange artists work 2 days a week in the gallery and tech rooms

I’ve been working on this body of work for a couple years with some help from a Canada council for the arts grant. It melds my landscape pieces with drawings on mostly thrown wall pieces.

This solo exhibition was made possible with the assistance of a Canada Council For the Arts Grant.

This collection of ceramic wall pieces straddles clay and painting with sweeping abstracted landscapes and narrative drawing.

A juxtaposition of glassy glazes rough clay and delicate lines highlights the material at its most versatile, both wheel thrown and hand sculpted.

Using open vistas, plant life and natural land formations to create conversation between figurative subjects and their spaces.

Exploring the spaces that we take for ourselves to connect and reconnect with our inner core, moments of internal intimacy; our struggles and hopes. Space for quiet repose or weighted expectations of life. The viewer can stand before the collection as a whole and feel transported or spend time with each piece and its narrative.The viewer can fill in the narrative carried in her landscapes with their own experiences. The subject is subjective and ultimately internal.
